Te Ngaere Bay, Northland: a home away from home

A fair chunk of our time away was destined to be spent in this magical spot. I have come here for breaks away from the city and routine all my life. It is a family heartground, especially since Jude, my Mum, died. Roger and the kids are at very at ease and at home here too.

It has been a wonderful gift to all of us and family & friends who come to enjoy its restorative environment. What the future holds for this beautiful soulful coastal spot with the sea at our feet does not bode well – the current generations are making sure we relish it moment to moment.

These holidays the days slipped into fishing and swimming of course, but also a lot of zip lining next door at Gail & Dean’s, table tennis, boogie boarding, rockpooling, kayaking and some spectacular walks, building and destroying sand castles, watching a lot of Australian Open tennis and the Winter Olympics. And eating ice cream –  delightfully  blueberry ice cream from Waipapa way.

Family and friends came and went, we ate, drank and played together: Dad, Beth, Don, Euan, Prue, Harry, Nathaniel, Fergus, the Christmas clan, Gail and Dean, Kama and Mia, Mark Harris, Duncan, Jen, and Dave Bench, the Fish Fawks….

The Mahinepua peninsula walk was a favourite go-to over the holiday (although it took Anya a while to warm into it….) and deserves its own set of pics as the vistas and sea scapes just kept pulling us back.

Jen & Dave  visited from the U.K. and we had the most magnificent weather and subsequently  headed off to Mahinepua and Matauri Bay to hike about in the sunshine and have a Jellytip. Check Dave on the zipline!
