Te Ngaere Bay was a base for exploring and learning and fishing and laughing and eating. There was a kooky tame shag, the funkiest fish smoker ever and a nonagenarian who had no idea how to drive Beatrice the mussel grinder. It was hard to leave.

Day trip to Ahipara on the west coast with Gail, Billy, Kama, Max and Anya – boogie boarding, tuatua ‘hunting’ courtesy of Gail’s friends, wine tasting and another great big bit of Kauri tree.

Different kinds of wave action with the cousins – faster is apparently better?

Billy’s “cooking night” – a scenic fish and chip moment at Whangaroa Harbour.

Hokianga Harbour – wild and windy with epic sand dunes guarding the entrance.

Journeying to and from was broken up with a murky side trip to Goat Island and of course a few stops at the famous Kawakawa loos – Hunderwasse’s legacy. Can you find Mum?

I am enjoying the tales of Tusitala waiting for the next episode
