Cape Town was spectacularly beautiful, and fully deserved it’s reputation for being so. Deep blue Atlantic ocean meets white sand beach meets skyscraping mountain range – we all loved it. Admittedly we saw the sanitised version of South Africa which worked well for the three generation travelling circus, there to admire it’s epic natural beauty, not it’s politics.

The Aquarium was impressive; the giant spider crabs supernatural and the rockhopper penguins like cranky English aristocrats with wild eyebrows. Great exhibits, Max made a top turtle.

The trip up the cable car to the top of Table Mountain bedecked with dassies and wide blue skies was blinding. The kids liked rock hopping round this alpine-like environment, and the rotating cable car floor was a surprising angle on the ride. The views from the top of this part of the world are truly magnificent.

It was a funky place to have Anya’s birthday, especially given the afternoon was spent with endangered African penguins at Boulders Beach. “Adorable!” they were, braying like donkeys and waddling like…. She had a wonderful day turning 9 – unicorn pyjamas, nutella and strawberry pancakes, allowed to push Max into an icy cold pool, and sushi for dinner. She missed her friends though, so there may well be a Townsville party in the offing down the track.

And then there were the sunsets over Camps Bay, gorgeous way to end the day.
